My hybrid bike isn't very stable (I can see it moving through the sun roof). The price is excellent, costing far less than other, similar racks. A few minor changes could go a long way here. First, the plates where the rack sits on your crossbars should be wider to provide better side-to-side stability. Also, the lock nuts on the u-bolts tend to hit the sides of this plate making tightening/loosening more difficult. (This would not be a problem if the plate was wider). ADVICE: Once your bike is in place, tighten the bolt for the piece that comes up and clamps your bike. Make the clamp as tight as possible, then tighten the bolt that connects the clamp arm to the rack, this will help a lot. (It would be even better if the clamp arm was attached to the rack more permanently instead of an easily removable bolt. It should be a pin). It would also be nice if there were a more sturdy way to secure the tires to the rack but the safety straps are OK. Also, love that the clamp locks but would be... The carriage bolt will strip the square plastic hole it is in when you tighten the hand knob. Be prepared to replace the carriage bolt with threaded rod and a couple of lock nuts on the end. Then you will have to use a wrench to tighten it down. |
