(Misc.) A park tool repair stand for $150 is highway robbery...until you buy this thing. I'll walk you through the disappointment to save you some time: Open the instructions and wade through the mislabeled parts, broken english, and worthless pictures. Do your best to guess which parts go together, then consult the photos online to actually get it together. Next, make sure to go through and tighten the factory installed bolts after you realize they are all loose. After that, give the company a call to order a new "clamp" hook because the one in the box is missing a couple threads. While you're waiting on that, take a contractor's knife and reshape the bottom bracket "cradle" so it's actually the shape of a bottom bracket. After the new clamp comes, hoist up your bike and, with arms outstretched, quickly realize there isn't enough clearance between your down tube and front tire to allow the front wheel to sit straight. (Misc.) The stand can support the weight of a moutain bike without tipping over... but barely. The list price of $150 is a joke but for $25+shipping it's better than nothing.Bear in mind that it isn't a full featured repair stand. If you have cables running below your downtube they'll get pinched so you may not be able to shift (especially if the cables are not contained in a housing). The fact that the bike can only be positioned horizontally may also be limiting. (Misc.) I certainly didn't want to spend $100+ for a work stand! After a little searching, found this model and paid $32.26 w/shipping included. Easy to assemble but the first time I used it, kinda skeptical about the stability. On the upper cup fitting, the "tooth opening" would not allow base of bike to be seated all the way down. However, using a Dremel tool and filing them back some, after making sure this small modification wouldn't void the warranty from the vendor, got an excellent fit and noticeable IMPROVED stability. Only will use this for minor maintenance, chain cleaning, bike cleaning, etc., and for the price paid, certainly a satisfied customer! |
